01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

A bite into the soft mochi skin brings a faint trace of salt that cleanses the palate and highlights the natural sweetness of the red bean paste. Situated along the Sugamo Jizo-dori Shopping Street, Mizuno is a longstanding Japanese confectionery shop best known for its shio daifuku. The signature Ganso Shio Daifuku packs a generous core of bean paste into an elastic, pillowy rice-cake wrapper, creating a balanced savory-sweet profile without any cloying weight. Individually wrapped Tokusen Shio Daifuku are also available for easy gifting or carrying.

Sampling Mame Daifuku and Seasonal Sweets

Sharing the spotlight is the shop's mame daifuku, where tender, salted red peas add toothsome bite to the silky bean paste. Behind the counter, selections extend beyond daifuku to encompass fragrant, kinako-dusted kibi dango millet cakes, ohagi, mugwort-scented kusamochi, and skewered mitarashi dango glazed in sweet soy sauce, making it easy to assemble an assortment for tasting while wandering the neighborhood.

Queues regularly form at the counter, yet the transaction line moves along briskly thanks to efficient counter service. Note that payment is strictly cash only, so having yen ready avoids any snag. Whether sampled fresh on the street or carried home to savor beside a pot of tea, Mizuno offers a straightforward encounter with time-tested shitamachi confections.
